Lower Back Pain

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain resulting from irritation, inflammation, or injury to the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and legs.

Sciatica Symptoms

Pain from sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated, inflamed, or compressed. This nerve runs from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and legs. The pain may vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation and usually affects only one side of the body.

Common Sciatica Symptoms:

  • ✔ Pain in the lower back, buttocks, and leg
  • ✔ Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot
  • ✔ Pain that worsens with movement or prolonged sitting
  • ✔ “Pins and needles” sensation in legs, toes, or feet
  • ✔ Loss of bladder or bowel control (in severe cases)

Sciatica Causes

Sciatica can arise from multiple conditions, such as:

  • ✔ Herniated or slipped disc pressing on the sciatic nerve
  • ✔ Degenerative disc disease leading to narrowing of nerve passageways
  • ✔ Spondylolisthesis, where a vertebra slips and compresses the nerve
  • ✔ Osteoarthritis with bone spurs pinching the sciatic nerve
  • ✔ Trauma or injury to the lower back or sciatic nerve
  • ✔ Tumors in the lumbar spine compressing the nerve

Sciatica Diagnosis

Doctors begin by reviewing your symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical examination. They assess muscle strength, reflexes, and flexibility through tasks like walking on toes or heels, rising from a squat, and leg lifts. Pain typically intensifies during these movements.

Imaging tests may also be conducted to confirm the diagnosis, including:

  • X-ray – identifies bone overgrowth compressing nerves
  • MRI – detects herniated discs and nerve compression
  • CT Myelogram – uses dye and X-rays to examine the spinal cord & nerves
  • Electromyography (EMG) – measures nerve impulses and muscle responses
