Lower Back Pain

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It is most commonly observed in children and adolescents. Along with side-to-side bending, the spine may also twist or rotate, which can cause the ribs and muscles on one side of the body to appear more prominent.

Scoliosis Symptoms

  • ✔ Uneven shoulders or waist
  • ✔ Head not aligned with the pelvis
  • ✔ One shoulder blade appearing more prominent
  • ✔ Rib cage protrusion on one side
  • ✔ Back sticking out when bending forward
  • ✔ One hip higher than the other
  • ✔ Body leaning to one side

Scoliosis Causes

The exact cause of scoliosis is often unknown, but in many cases it may be linked to hereditary factors. It is also more common in individuals with muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy.

Less common causes may include:

  • ✔ Birth abnormalities affecting spinal bone development
  • ✔ Chest wall surgery during infancy
  • ✔ Spinal infections or injuries
  • ✔ Spinal cord abnormalities

Scoliosis Diagnosis

Most scoliosis cases are mild, but some curves can worsen as a child grows, potentially leading to physical limitations or breathing issues due to reduced chest space.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam and imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI. A curve greater than 25–30° is considered significant and may require treatment. Curves over 45–50° indicate severe scoliosis and often demand immediate intervention.

Curves below 25° are usually monitored with regular check-ups and imaging. A neurological exam may also be conducted to detect muscle weakness, numbness, or abnormal reflexes.
