Lower Back Pain

Spondylosis

Spondylosis is one of the most common spinal conditions affecting people worldwide. It is essentially a form of spinal osteoarthritis—a degenerative disorder that gradually wears down the spine, potentially leading to the loss of its normal structure and function.

Spondylosis Symptoms

Spondylosis can affect different regions of the spine — cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (lower back). Depending on the area involved, symptoms may vary:

Cervical (Neck) Spondylosis
  • ✔ Persistent neck pain that may radiate to the shoulders or arms
  • ✔ Weakness or numbness in the arm, wrist, or hand due to nerve compression
  • ✔ Difficulty swallowing in rare cases, caused by bone spurs pressing on the esophagus
Thoracic (Mid-Back) Spondylosis
  • ✔ Pain or stiffness in the mid-back, often worsening when bending forward or overextending
Lumbar (Lower Back) Spondylosis
  • ✔ Chronic lower back pain with reduced flexibility
  • ✔ Pain radiating to hips, buttocks, or legs
  • ✔ Muscle weakness, spasms, or tingling sensations in the legs

Spondylosis Causes

Spondylosis usually develops gradually over time. The main contributing factors include:

  • Age-related degeneration – Natural wear and tear reduces water content in spinal discs, making them prone to shrinkage, herniation, or bulging.
  • Repetitive strain & overuse – Regular bending, lifting, or poor posture leads to chronic stress on spinal joints and muscles.
  • Trauma or injury – Accidents or falls can damage spinal structures, triggering inflammation and long-term degeneration.
  • Genetic predisposition – Family history of spine disorders may increase susceptibility.

Spondylosis Diagnosis

Diagnosis starts with a review of medical history and a physical examination to assess flexibility, reflexes, and nerve function. Depending on symptoms, the doctor may recommend:

  • X-rays – to detect bone spurs and spinal alignment changes
  • MRI or CT scans – for detailed imaging of discs, nerves, and soft tissues
  • Motion X-rays – taken while bending forward/backward to evaluate stability
