Lower Back Pain

Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of spaces in the spine, which puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. It commonly occurs in the neck and lower back, and if untreated, it can worsen over time.

Stenosis Symptoms

Symptoms may vary depending on the area of the spine affected:

  • Neck Region: Chronic neck pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in arms and hands, walking or balance issues, loss of bladder/bowel control.
  • Lower Back: Chronic back pain, radiating pain from buttocks to legs, leg cramps, weakness/numbness, pain after walking or standing long periods, relief when bending forward.
  • Abdomen: Tingling or pain in the abdomen, numbness or weakness below abdomen level, difficulty maintaining balance.

Stenosis Causes

Stenosis is often linked to age-related degeneration, especially in individuals over 50. Other causes include:

  • ✔ Bone spurs from arthritis narrowing the spinal canal
  • ✔ Herniated discs exerting pressure on spinal nerves
  • ✔ Thickened ligaments pressing into the spinal canal
  • ✔ Spinal injuries or trauma leading to bone displacement
  • ✔ Congenital spinal defects like scoliosis or a narrow canal
  • ✔ Tumors developing inside the spinal canal (rare)

Stenosis Diagnosis

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical exam. Imaging tests are often recommended, including:

  • X-rays – Detect bone changes narrowing the canal
  • MRI – Shows soft tissue damage, disc issues, tumors
  • CT Scan – Cross-sectional imaging for detailed analysis
  • CT Myelogram – CT with contrast dye for clearer spinal cord views
